Why should I consider doing a private yoga session?
Unlike basic or open public classes, private lessons are a one on one experience with a teacher. Private lessons can bring about significant improvements to one’s mental and physical health and help one achieve personal yoga goals.
At Kodawari we believe that private yoga lessons are something that more people would benefit from and here’s why:
What you’re paying for with private instruction is the attention of a trained professional to guide you through a series of breathing exercises, postures and adjustments, specifically tailored to your practice, your body, your needs and the specific things you want to accomplish with your practice.
For some people, that might mean learning the basics all the way through to working on inversions, while for someone else it might mean getting the right adjustments for their lower back, and for yet another person it might mean being guided through a meditation to calm anxiety.
Instead of looking at a private yoga lesson as the multiplied cost of a group class, it’s far more accurate to look at it as an opportunity for all the energy and expertise that a yoga teacher usually has to divide amongst a class of people, to be all directed at you.
Often times you’ll notice in class a teacher will ask about whether people want or don’t want adjustments. After having a few privates with the same teacher, they start to understand your body and your needs in ways that they simply wouldn’t be able to when teaching to a public group.
This affords you an opportunity to get exactly what you want, and nothing you don’t.
Gaining Initial Experience
Beginning yoga students can feel overwhelmed in typical class settings, particularly during the first few classes. It can seem difficult to keep up and personal flexibility might require a little work before it becomes easier to get into different poses.
You can avoid feeling overwhelmed and uncomfortable by taking private lessons to get started. A private yoga teacher shows each move personally and can help improve form immediately, which makes it easier to get started.
Touch (If that's your thing)
It’s interesting to note that of all the senses we have, how often we sometimes go without the sensation of touch by another person. I don’t necessarily think a private yoga lesson is something you should get just because you want to be touched (I’m not sounding creepy right?) but I do think that adjustments and the touch by another human are indeed one of the many positive aspects of a private yoga class.
A safe place for emotional release
We know that moving your body and opening up to current time sensation and being in the now can mean that there is the potential for hidden emotions to come to the surface and be released. A good teacher will make sure that your private classes are a safe place for you, and if a burst of emotional release is something that your body generates, a private yoga lesson is a safe place for this to happen.
Positive impact on your group classes
An obvious benefit of private yoga instruction is the compounding benefit that it has on your group class participation. It’s really remarkable how being shown a few modifications in a private can have a cascading impact into your practice as a whole.
Creating a Personalized Schedule
Although the experience itself and goal planning are important, making the time to practice is a vital element of yoga. If it’s not possible to get to a class, then joining a class is not the best choice. In such an instance, a private lesson can accommodate even the most hectic of schedules.
Private lessons work around personal plans and scheduling conflicts. Taking lessons at any time of the day or night, depending on work and/or social obligations, allows more flexibility in one’s yoga practice.
Overcoming Health Concerns
Injuries and health concerns can make a normal yoga class impractical for some participants. A yoga teacher teaching several students at one time cannot focus on individual needs or ensure that the poses will not further injure or strain a particular person. Furthermore, health concerns like pregnancy, diabetes or heart disease may require special alterations to one’s yoga practice.
When health concerns are a potential issue, it is best to have a private yoga lesson. The teacher can work around the problem and avoid further complications.
Developing a Plan for Personal Home Yoga
A private yoga lesson makes it possible to create a plan that is appropriate for practicing in the home.
Working on In-Depth Practice
Although beginners can benefit from private lessons to gain confidence and learn safe practices, private lessons also are beneficial for advanced practitioners. Private instruction can allow one to take their yoga practice to the next level. Advanced classes, in a group setting, might not offer the level of challenge and planning that is required for more advanced practitioners.
It is beneficial to work with a private yoga teacher. In many cases, it will result in better skills, a greater level of confidence and fewer complications.
Likewise, private yoga lessons may be the right approach to getting started or taking one’s yoga practice to the next level. If you’ve been on the fence over scheduling a private, I say go for it.
