What to Wear

Yoga is most often done barefoot. You will occasionally see people with some kind of sock or shoe, but it’s usually due to an injury or medical condition. This is usually welcome news for people who are tired of carrying around an extra pair of shoes for the gym.

There are many different styles of yoga pants, but you don’t have to run out and buy a special pair before your very first class. Any comfortable exercise pants or shorts will do. After a few classes, you may feel like you wish the pants you have were shorter/longer/looser/higher waisted/not falling down every time you stretch up.

A shirt that is a little bit fitted works best. A big baggy t-shirt is not great since it will probably slide down every time you bend over. And you’re going to be doing a lot of bending over. Sleeveless tops are popular since they allow freedom of movement in the arms and shoulders. Wear whatever kind of bra you prefer for exercising.

Again, a solid bra that can keep things in place is an imperative. This doesn’t have to be a super expensive, luxury item. Think function first and then get fancy if you want to…you might be finding yourself doing a lot of forward folding where your head is below your waist so…be properly prepared.

If you a headed to your very first class, don’t worry about bringing a mat if you don’t have one. We have mats and towels for rent for $2. As you keep going to class or if you are practicing at home, you are going to want to invest in your own mat. There are lots of different considerations as to which mat is right for you. Our current favorite is made by Clever Yoga.

What to Bring

Water bottle

We have a bottle water filling station as well as drinks for sale in case you forget your water bottle.

We provide you with bolsters, blocks, blankets, and straps when needed. Your teacher will tell you which props will be needed for class.

How to Prepare for Class

It’s best not to eat a heavy meal right before you do yoga. When you start moving, everything gets churned up and you don’t want to feel full. We suggest fueling up at least 2 hours prior to class with a light snack

Warming up

If you are early to class, try stretch a bit or relax and center your mind. You can also just lie on your back or sit cross legged on your mat. This makes you look serene.

As a practice, yoga is guided by the parameters of the yamas (attitudes or behaviors regarding relationships between the individual and the outside world) and niyamas (attitudes we adopt toward ourselves). One attitude or practice within the niyamas that many of us can actually come to enjoy engaging in is the practice of tapas…and we’re not talking about small plates in a restaurant here.

In Sanskrit, one of the most well-known definitions for tapas is heat, or inner fire. Literally it means heating the body and by doing so, cleansing it. The idea being that we burn away the “rubbish or toxins” of the physical body, detoxify the heart and mind so as to clear the way for the divine impulse to life to shine through, unimpeded.

So for those of you that like getting a jumpstart on this inner fire we have chosen a sophisticated infrared heating and ventilation system for our large practice room. We named it the Onsen room which also translates to hot springs in Japanese! While generating serious, deep heat it simultaneously minimizes distraction, noise, increases muscle flexibility, blood circulation, and detoxification.

In case you are not familiar with infrared heat, it converts light directly to heat, warming nearby objects without raising the air temperature. This allows a student in an infrared class to absorb heat while the surrounding air does not. This type of heat is most like natural sunlight. Since the air itself does not get hot with infrared heat, it is suitable and tolerable for most students – especially those with respiratory issues who find it uncomfortable or even risky to participate in a heated yoga class. Additionally, the infrared system does not recirculate air, so it reduces the circulation of dirty air and bacteria and is virtually silent.

As you walk into our hot practice room you will feel a gentle heat that will increase as you move through the class. The skin will absorb the infrared heat, causing the molecules of your tissue to vibrate and to expel toxins, fat and impurities from cells and out into your bloodstream.

Once in your bloodstream, these can be released from your body in the form of sweat. The result is an incredible cleansing effect at a deep cellular level. This is the same type of heat hospitals use to keep premature babies warm – we just kicked it up a few notches for the detoxifying effect.

Yoga in our infrared practice room will give you more than just an amazing workout. There are numerous added health benefits that come along with practicing at our infrared heated studio:

The support and give of the flooring lets yogis practice longer, have a quicker recovery time and reduces wear and tear on joints. It also invites the practitioner to be more willing to try something new – let’s say an advanced pose like crow without the same fear of falling as they might on other traditional flooring like hardwood or bamboo. Plus they are antibacterial, antifungal and super-easy-to-clean mats are made from non-toxic, recycled materials. It’s a win-win.

Cold plunge | all levels | 1 min in | 1 min out for 3 rounds

Cold water immersion (CWI), otherwise known as ice-baths, plunge pools and/or cold water therapy is a recovery process involving the immersion of the body into cold water (≤15˚C/59˚F) immediately after exercise in an attempt to enhance the recovery process. Depending on the intensity, exercise can cause various degrees of fatigue to the musculoskeletal, nervous, and metabolic systems. Exercise is also associated with microscopic tears in muscle tissue, commonly known as exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD), this can then cause Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness (DOMS) and cold water immersion therapy is a popular recovery protocol that helps promote physical and psychological readiness.

Due to its ability to improve recovery time and reduce the symptoms of DOMS, water immersion therapy has become a popular recovery method amongst sport scientists as it is commonly believed that water immersion therapy can:

  • Reduce edemas and inflammation
  • Decrease the perception of pain associated with muscular soreness
  • Decrease the perception of fatigue
  • Alter localized blood flow
  • Alter localized tissue and core temperature
  • Alter heart rate
  • Reduce muscle spasms
  • Reduce tissue inflammation
  • Reduce muscle damage
  • Improve range of motion

Welcome to Healing and Connection

By committing to your yoga practice you will notice an increased sense of presence, wellness, and mindfulness – as calm infuses into your life on so many levels. And while heated yoga is currently experiencing the “limelight” in many studios we understand – yoga in a heated room is not for everyone. That is why we offer classes ambient classes! Many of our unheated classes are of a restorative nature, but some are quite powerful (check our schedule) and you will have plenty of opportunity to build your own heat as you move through the class.

Most of the classes we offer consist of Hatha and Vinyasa (Flow) yoga principles. Our teachers draw from diverse backgrounds including Ashtanga, Iyengar, Baptiste, Bikram, and more. We offer a unique breadth of experience as our instructors come from an eclectic mix of backgrounds. They integrate ideas and teachings from several different yoga schools, traditions and modern day science.

If you are ready to increase your flexibility and feel and be stronger in both body and mind then know that our heated AND unheated classes will meet that need! All great classes are built around listening to your body, and honoring the messages that is sends. No expectations, just surrender! We believe that every practitioner has his or her own valid reason to step on the mat, and we respect each person’s individual experience. We encourage you to adjust or modify your practice as you see fit.

Yoga poses, breathwork and meditation are practices that revitalize the body and mind by increasing circulation to the organs, targeting the fascia and connective tissue around the joints, and calming the entire nervous system.

In both heated and ambient formats, props are often used to create more ease for the expression of the breath and the ensuing appropriate effort of the body. This all culminates in stilling the mind and encouraging inner awareness and present moment, calm focus.

Our focus is on your body’s natural tendency toward health and self-healing.

The purpose of yoga is to build strength, awareness and harmony in both the mind and body. The idea is to explore your limits, not strive for some pretzel-like perfection. The relaxation techniques incorporated in yoga can lessen chronic pain, such as lower back pain, arthritis, headaches and carpal tunnel syndrome. A consistent yoga practice can also lower blood pressure and reduce insomnia. Some of the other physical benefits of yoga include:

Why should I consider doing a private yoga session?

Unlike basic or open public classes, private lessons are a one on one experience with a teacher. Private lessons can bring about significant improvements to one’s mental and physical health and help one achieve personal yoga goals. At Kodawari we believe that private yoga lessons are something that more people would benefit from and here’s why:

Focused Attention

What you’re paying for with private instruction is the attention of a trained professional to guide you through a series of breathing exercises, postures and adjustments, specifically tailored to your practice, your body, your needs and the specific things you want to accomplish with your practice. For some people, that might mean learning the basics all the way through to working on inversions, while for someone else it might mean getting the right adjustments for their lower back, and for yet another person it might mean being guided through a meditation to calm anxiety.Instead of looking at a private yoga lesson as the multiplied cost of a group class, it’s far more accurate to look at it as an opportunity for all the energy and expertise that a yoga teacher usually has to divide amongst a class of people, to be all directed at you.

Tailored Adjustments

Often times you’ll notice in class a teacher will ask about whether people want or don’t want adjustments. After having a few privates with the same teacher, they start to understand your body and your needs in ways that they simply wouldn’t be able to when teaching to a public group. This affords you an opportunity to get exactly what you want, and nothing you don’t.

Gaining Initial Experience

Beginning yoga students can feel overwhelmed in typical class settings, particularly during the first few classes. It can seem difficult to keep up and personal flexibility might require a little work before it becomes easier to get into different poses. You can avoid feeling overwhelmed and uncomfortable by taking private lessons to get started. A private yoga teacher shows each move personally and can help improve form immediately, which makes it easier to get started.

Touch (If that's your thing)

It’s interesting to note that of all the senses we have, how often we sometimes go without the sensation of touch by another person. I don’t necessarily think a private yoga lesson is something you should get just because you want to be touched (I’m not sounding creepy right?) but I do think that adjustments and the touch by another human are indeed one of the many positive aspects of a private yoga class.

A safe place for emotional release

We know that moving your body and opening up to current time sensation and being in the now can mean that there is the potential for hidden emotions to come to the surface and be released. A good teacher will make sure that your private classes are a safe place for you, and if a burst of emotional release is something that your body generates, a private yoga lesson is a safe place for this to happen.

Positive impact on your group classes

An obvious benefit of private yoga instruction is the compounding benefit that it has on your group class participation. It’s really remarkable how being shown a few modifications in a private can have a cascading impact into your practice as a whole.

Creating a Personalized Schedule

Although the experience itself and goal planning are important, making the time to practice is a vital element of yoga. If it’s not possible to get to a class, then joining a class is not the best choice. In such an instance, a private lesson can accommodate even the most hectic of schedules.Private lessons work around personal plans and scheduling conflicts. Taking lessons at any time of the day or night, depending on work and/or social obligations, allows more flexibility in one’s yoga practice.

Overcoming Health Concerns

Injuries and health concerns can make a normal yoga class impractical for some participants. A yoga teacher teaching several students at one time cannot focus on individual needs or ensure that the poses will not further injure or strain a particular person. Furthermore, health concerns like pregnancy, diabetes or heart disease may require special alterations to one’s yoga practice. When health concerns are a potential issue, it is best to have a private yoga lesson. The teacher can work around the problem and avoid further complications.

Developing a Plan for Personal Home Yoga

A private yoga lesson makes it possible to create a plan that is appropriate for practicing in the home.

Working on In-Depth Practice

Although beginners can benefit from private lessons to gain confidence and learn safe practices, private lessons also are beneficial for advanced practitioners. Private instruction can allow one to take their yoga practice to the next level. Advanced classes, in a group setting, might not offer the level of challenge and planning that is required for more advanced practitioners. It is beneficial to work with a private yoga teacher. In many cases, it will result in better skills, a greater level of confidence and fewer complications.Likewise, private yoga lessons may be the right approach to getting started or taking one’s yoga practice to the next level. If you’ve been on the fence over scheduling a private, I say go for it.
